Steve Maglieri is so good at setting up a family winegrowing business, he’s done it twice. Maglieri Wines and its estate was sold to Beringer Blass in the 1990s after 40 years of operation. Soon after, Steve acquired the old Andrew Garret site, which is now his own family estate, named Serafino (Steve’s Italian name). It’s a spectacular site, with sweeping vineyards surrounded by ancient gum trees and picturesque grounds overlooking a magnificent lake.
The Serafino estate covers a range of blocks and terroirs over 120 hectares, planted both to traditional grapes (Shiraz, Grenache, Chardonnay) and emerging McLaren Vale varieties like Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Fiano.
The traditional range, known colloquially as the Black Label wines are the McLaren Vale classics, while Bellissimo shows Serafino’s foray into these Italian varieties which are proving to flourish in McLaren Vale’s warm maritime climate. The Goose Island wines are named after the island at the centre of Serafino’s lake, and are blended from across the estate to represent excellent value, while Sharktooth and Terremoto are the pinnacle of Serafino’s offering.
