Still family-owned and resting entirely on Coonawarra’s terra rossa strip, Majella Wines is one of Australia’s most awarded small wineries. The Lynn family have been residents of the Penola – Coonawarra district for five generations, and since 1968 they have been graziers and wine growers.
Just over half of Majella’s 60 hectares of vines are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by about 35% Shiraz and smaller proportions of Merlot and Riesling. Over two-thirds of the vines were planted 50 years ago, with the youngest vines on the property still well over 25 years of age.
Known predominately for the varietally intense and staunchly regional and age-worthy Cabernet wines, the entry level Musician Cab Shiraz has been praised by Halliday as “one of Australia’s most outstanding red wines” for its price level.
All Majella wines are entirely estate-sourced. Winemaker Bruce Gregory has been at the helm since inception, and was joined by Michael Marcus in 2008.
