Terroir Summary:
Cantine Capetta draws on a network of hillside vineyards across the Langhe, centred around Santo Stefano Belbo and Cossano Belbo. Sites such as Santa Libera and San Grato Monti sit at higher elevations, where cooler conditions and strong diurnal shifts preserve acidity and aromatic lift, while lower-altitude vineyards offer broader, more generous fruit profiles. The combination of calcareous-clay soils, varied exposures and a landscape rich in woodland and biodiversity allows for a balanced expression of Piemonte’s classic varieties, from structured Nebbiolo to perfumed and heady Moscato and refined sparkling wines.
Heritage:
Founded in 1953 by Francesco Capetta in Santo Stefano Belbo, the company began as a small, family-run operation rooted in the Langhe, initially focused on local wine production and bulk sales. From these origins, Capetta steadily expanded, investing early in modern winemaking technology — including temperature-controlled sparkling production — while building a strong network of growers across the region. By the 1990s, the estate had established itself as a major force in the Italian market, combining scale with a deep connection to Piemonte’s viticultural identity, before successfully extending its reach into international markets. Today, still family-owned and now in its third generation, Cantine Capetta has evolved into a multi-brand group encompassing Capetta, Duchessa Lia and Balbi Soprani, maintaining a balance between tradition, technological innovation and a long-standing commitment to accessible, regionally authentic wines.
Philosophy:
The Capetta family philosophy centres on producing wines that are approachable yet expressive, combining tradition with innovation. Significant investment in modern winemaking infrastructure, aging facilities and product development reflects a commitment to consistency and quality. This is underpinned by a belief that well-made, regionally authentic wines should remain accessible, delivering strong value without compromising identity. Sustainability and responsible production are reinforced through certifications including Equalitas and SA8000.
People:
Cantine Capetta remains firmly family-led under the direction of owner and president Riccardo Capetta, with the third generation — Sara, Nicolò, Matteo and Vittoria — actively involved in shaping the future of the estate and ensuring continuity. The technical direction is overseen by chief winemaker Paolo Bussi, who, with over 30 years at the company and a background in oenology and chemistry, leads all aspects of production and quality, building on the legacy of longtime family oenologist Germano Bosio. Supporting the estate’s international presence, Roberto Robba has managed export markets since 1999.
Beyond the Vine:
Recent investments include fully modernised bottling lines (up to 14,000 bottles per hour), expanded storage capacity, new barrel-aging facilities and a dedicated Alta Langa production and hospitality space. The estate has broadened its portfolio across key Piemonte denominations and maintains a strong position within the Italian domestic market.
