Vallepicciola’s Lapina Vineyard is perched at 400m on some very rocky and calcareous soil. The terroir of this particular site, with its controlled stress, deep-rooted vines and stunning aspect leads to wines with bright acidity, firm tannins, and mineral-driven complexity. Winemaking is similar to the other Chianti wines (100% Sangiovese, hand-picked, fermentation in temperature-controlled cement vats, malolactic in French oak), with the key difference for Gran Selezione being th 30 months maturation in barrique, followed by 3 months in cement to balance the blend before bottling and a futher 8 months maturation here before release.

From an exceptional vintage (98/100 on Wine Spectator), this is a multi-layered wine, balancing lifted wild herbs and florals with bold plum and blueberry fruit then a third dimension of savoury leather, tobacco and electric minerality. The palate too balances density and elegance, culminating in fine tannins and a lingering finish.

The aroma opens with hints of calamint and thyme, followed by fruity notes of raspberry and currant, finishing with assorted spices, particularly cloves.
