Terroir:
Vallepicciola’s vineyards span elevations between 300 and 480 metres, with a complex geological composition of limestone, marl, clay, and sandstone-derived soils. Across the estate, galestro and alberese contribute structure and minerality, while clay components enhance body and water retention. Significant diurnal temperature variation supports slow, even ripening, preserving freshness alongside phenolic development. Site variation is key: higher-altitude vineyards such as Lapina deliver refined, structured Sangiovese with freshness and elegance, while lower, calcareous marl sites such as Boscobruno provide ideal drainage and aromatic intensity, particularly for Pinot Noir. These combined elements allow for both power and precision across the estate’s wines.
Heritage:
Vallepicciola was established in the late 1990s, when the Bolfo family restored the ruins of a historic monastery in Pievasciata, within the Chianti Classico zone of Castelnuovo Berardenga. From these origins—now closely linked to the five-star Hotel Le Fontanelle—the estate has grown into a 265-hectare property with 109 hectares under vine. In recent years, the appointment of winemaker and General Manager Alessandro Cellai has been pivotal, bringing a clear vision focused on site expression, precision, and the elevation of Sangiovese alongside international varieties. This evolution has culminated in significant recognition, including being named “Winery of the Year 2026” by Le Guide de L’Espresso—a testament to the estate’s quality, consistency, and modern identity within Chianti Classico.
Philosophy:
Vallepicciola’s philosophy is guided by a balance of innovation, environmental responsibility, and respect for the land. The estate is certified under the VIVA “Sustainability in the Italian Wine Sector” program, reflecting a commitment to continuous improvement and responsible production practices. Alongside its Chianti Classico wines, the winery embraces an unconventional approach to premium Toscana IGT wines, using them as a platform for greater creative freedom and expression across both Sangiovese and international varieties. Supported by a modern winery designed to harmonise with its surroundings, the aim is to craft wines that authentically reflect the Tuscan landscape while embracing a progressive, quality-driven outlook.
