Howard Park Grand Jeté

Howard Park’s Grand Jeté is the flagship wine of the Jeté sparkling collection, produced from hand-harvested Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (with Meunier included in some vintages) sourced from the cool-climate vineyards of Mount Barker in Great Southern and, more recently, Pemberton. Made in the méthode traditionnelle, only the finest free-run juice is retained from whole-bunch pressing before fermentation in a combination of stainless steel and French oak, with selected batches undergoing malolactic fermentation to build complexity. The wine spends a minimum of 48 months on lees prior to disgorgement, developing exceptional texture, depth and refinement. The sparkling program is led by Chief Winemaker Nic Bowen, who spent more than a decade working alongside and being mentored by legendary House of Arras winemaker Ed Carr, widely regarded as Australia’s foremost authority on traditional-method sparkling wine.

2020

“Restrained and composed, opening with brine, sea salt, Meyer lemon, white peach and baked apple, before delicate pastry dough and subtle almond emerge. The palate is suave and flowing, underpinned by a fine bead… Tight, citrusy acidity coils around the richer tones, drawing the wine to good length with lemon pith and green apple prominent through the finish. Lots to like here — refined, youthful and impressively long.” 94 points, Tom Kline, Winepilot

2019

“Jeté is really starting to arrive as a sparkling producer of note. Maybe it arrived a while back, I’m not sure, but for me it’s only been in the past year or two that’s it’s really started to break through. This wine serves as Exhibit A. It tastes of Vegemite, strawberries, brine, grapefruit and cooked apples, though get ten wine critics in a room and they’ll all describe it differently. A more accurate thing to say is that it’s a wine of seamless complexity. It rolls through the palate with sparklers attached. The brine/yeasty/interplay here is captivating and delicious. At $58 it’s a bit of a steal.” 94 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
