Checchi’s Classico is entirely from the UGA of Castellina in Chianti, from sites sitting at around 340m altitude. The Classico vineyards are less alluvial than the entry Chianti sites, with the all important Galestro Toscano soils, pebbly limestone matter that is free draining and provides fruit with great concentration. The nose is characterised by red fruits integrated with wild herbs, offset by sweet spice and cedar from 6 months in barriques. The palate is soft and full-bodied, with vibrant tannins that progress deeply, accompanied by a lovely freshness. The sweet and savoury balance seesaws throughout, tapering slowly on a long finish.

“Plums, cherry pits and walnuts on the nose of this juicy, savory red. It’s medium-bodied with lightly dusty tannins. Firm at the end. Try from 2026.” 92 points, James Suckling
“The bright fruit of a traditional Sangiovese wine is evident but it has a fruit-forward density you don’t often find in a Classico expression. Slightly raisiny at times, the wine is built around notes of overripe plums tempered by a layer of baking spice, considerable vanilla, and milk chocolate notes. Less tart than expected, with moderated tannins adding some grip — which works perfectly to the wine’s favor. I was shocked when I saw the price tag on this bottle. It’s worth picking up by the case. Or more.” 9/10, Best Value, Drink Hacker
“The nose is both saline and floral, as aromas of tulips, peonies, mandarin blossoms and wild strawberries drift over a foundation of crushed rocks. On the palate, raspberries and oranges accentuate the wild strawberry element, while grippy, grainy tannins reinforce an underlying earthiness.” 90 points, Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast

2021
2021 is one of the great recent vintages of Chianti Classico, Antoni Galloni (Vinous) said: “The 2021s in particular are some of the most exciting young wines I have tasted in more than 25 years of visiting the region”. One to seek out, then! This vintage blend is 95% Sangiovese, with the remainder Colorino.
“Laced with black cherry, black currant and violet aromas and flavors, this red is immediately appealing for its lush fruit. Balanced, fresh and long, with iron, wild herb and tobacco details.” Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2023
