Tenuta Atzatura Montefalco di Sagrantino DOCG

Tenuta Atzatura Montefalco di Sagrantino DOCG

Towards the end of the 1990s the Cecchi family identified three different vineyard sites in the Montefalco area, bringing them together to form Tenuta Atzatura. Monterone, San Marco and Atzatura are their trilogy, all terroirs capable of producing distinctly different versions of the indigenous grape of the region, Sagrantino. This dry-toned, savoury, bold and tannic grape is rarely found outside of Umbria, where it enjoys the sunshine hours and continental climate of central Italy. Crop thinning, harvesting by hand and careful selection before de-stemming ensure Alzatura’s version of the grape is not only a genuine representation of the variety, but a balanced and eminently drinkable one. Fermentation is in stainless steel with frequent pump-overs and delestage. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged in oak barriques for approximately 16 months, followed by extensive aging in bottle before release.

2018

“Heady and powerful, this Montefalco Sagrantino boasts intense aromas of macerated blackberries, dried figs, worn leather and espresso. The palate is impressive, broad and shows concentrated flavors of black cherries in spirits doused with vanilla, clove, and cinnamon from oak aging. Firm but giving tannins the wine will has a long life in front of it. Drink from 2027” 92 points, Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast
