Towards the end of the 1990s the Cecchi family identified three different vineyard sites in the Montefalco area, bringing them together to form Tenuta Atzatura. Monterone, San Marco and Atzatura are their trilogy, all terroirs capable of producing distinctly different versions of the indigenous grape of the region, Sagrantino. This dry-toned, savoury, bold and tannic grape is rarely found outside of Umbria, where it enjoys the sunshine hours and continental climate of central Italy. Along with Sagrantino, Sangiovese, Trebbiano Spolentino and Merlot are also grown on the estate.
The family started its transition to organic viticulture across these sites in 2018, with 2021 being the first 100% organic vintage. This comes at an expense of quantity, as do the naturally low-yielding varieties of Sagrantino and Trebbiano Spoletino, which in some years only produce 3000 bottles of the DOC wines. For a larger group like Cecchi however, quantity is not paramount in this unique place, rather the protection of endangered grape varieties and traditional practice.
