Masi Mazzano Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG

Mazzano is a single vineyard wine bottled under Masi’s Cantina Boscaini Privata label, reserved only for the very best wines from the best vintages. The historic vineyard that births Mazzano has been renowned for its quality since the twelfth century. It’s a picturesque place in the commune of Negrar, a steep site that varies between 350 and 415m above sea level. Its loose-soiled terraces are supported by dry stone walls (marogne) and follow the contours of the hill with exposures from north-east to south-west.

Made from a blend of 75% Corvina, 20% Rondinella and 5% Molinara, this Amarone is produced using the traditional appassimento method, whereby carefully selected grape bunches harvested in late September to early October are laid on bamboo racks in naturally ventilated lofts to dry until mid‑February, losing approximately 35–40% of their weight. The cool, higher‑hillside microclimate limits the development of botrytis, preserving fruit purity and concentration. Following a gentle pressing, the grapes are fermented on their stalks for around 45 days in large Slavonian oak barrels at naturally low winter temperatures, with fermentation continuing until complete sugar conversion and full malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for three years in a combination of first-, second- and third‑use 600‑litre Allier and Slavonian oak barrels, followed by a minimum of six months in bottle, resulting in a wine with exceptional structure and an aging potential of 35–40 years.

“Shows more ripeness, volume and roundness compared to its sibling from Campolongo di Torbe. It feels like this wine also has a bit more sweetness, and this adds lots of life and brightness to its underlying aromas of black cherry confit and blackberry preserves. Mazzano also shows a distinctly savory spice with old spice, cured tobacco and a hint of smoked bresaola or bacon. Perhaps Mazzano is horizontal where Campolongo di Torbe is vertical, this wine is wide and broad, whereas the other is linear and deep. These are two different expressions that show beautifully a decade after the grapes were harvested.”  95 points, Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
