The same vineyards contribute to the Riserva as the Costasera, however the notable addition here is Oseleta, a grape Masi itself saved from extinction after the ravages of phylloxera. Ten per cent Oseleta contributes here, along with 70% Corvina, 15% Rondinella, and 5% Molinara. The ancient appassimento method is here allowed to progress over 120 days, when 40% of the weight is lost. A long fermentation in a combination of oak and steel follows, then maturation for between 38 and 40 months, and takes place solely in 600-litre casks (Slavonian and Allier, approximately one-third new).
The Oseleta grapes confer greater tannic structure and deeper colour to the wine, so together with extended appassimento, the Riserva presents as a more firmly structured and intense wine than the Costasera. Expect aromas of super-ripe fruit softened by hints of cinnamon and vanilla. Warming and satisfying in the mouth, baked fruit and sweet spices fill the mid palate. Dry and full-bodied, it finishes with hints of cherries and cloves. Cellar for up to 35 years.

“Unexpectedly fresh and lifted, with dusty rose, tobacco and sweet herbs giving way to medicinal cherries and blackberries. This is dark and intense yet energetic, with saturating red berries and spices giving way to a coating of rounded tannins toward the close. It turns slightly balsamic and with a bitter twang through the incredibly long finale, leaving wood tones and hints of mocha.” 95 points Antonio Galloni, Vinous
