Masi Campofiorin Rosso Verona IGT

This is the original ‘Supervenetian’ created by Masi in 1964 and was the prototype for a new category of wines from Veneto inspired by the Amarone production method. Described by Hugh Johnson as “an ingenious technique”, local Veronese grapes are vinified fresh from the harvest and then re-fermented with a small percentage of semi-dried grapes of the same varieties.

The wine is a traditional Valpolicella blend of approximately 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella and 5% Molinara, sourced from the stream-filled Veronese valleys on very alluvial terrain and eocenic limestone – with very similar pedoclimatic conditions to the original Campofiorin vineyard in Marano di Valpolicella. Maturation is for a minimum 18 months in wood (around two-thirds in large Slavonian oak barrels and the remainder in Allier and Slavonian new barrels.

2021

“Clean, savoury aromatics with dark cherry and red flower notes. Plenty of pomegranate palate freshness, juicy core and an intense finish.” Silver, Decanter World Wine Awards 2025

2020

The 2020 represents an update to Campofiorin, aimed at meeting modern tastes for ripe fruit flavours and smooth textures. There is a small increase in the percentage of Corvina in the blend, the base wine is harvested a little later for slightly lower acidity and softer tannins and the percentage of partially dried grapes in the refermentation passes from 25% to 30%.

“I’ve always liked this wine, sitting pretty as a double-fermented expression with a lighter framework of tannins melded to the density serviced by the double fermentation approach devised here: fresh wine re-fermented with 30% whole, semi-dried grapes. Notes of cherry amaro, porcini, lilac and riffs on the larger format wood, conferring an earthy breadth to the wine without detracting from freshness. Highly versatile and delicious.” 92 points, James Suckling

2018

“Aromas of ripe black-skinned fruit, underbrush and menthol form the nose. Made with both fresh and dried grapes, the full-bodied palate offers dried cherry, prune and licorice alongside fine-grained tannins.” 92 points, Kerin O’Keefe Wine Enthusiast
