This was the very first rosé wine to be bottled in Italy in 1943. Production began towards the end of the Second World War, thanks to the initiative and boldness of Don Piero, and it was sent for tasting to the American General Charles Poletti, Supply Officer of the Allied Forces. It’s a blend of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera grapes, harvested a little earlier than for the red wines, then cold macerated before clarification and fermentation in steel, also at low temperatures.
A fine and inviting nose has ripe yellow fruit and a spectrum of wild berries underpinned by spice. Crunchy on the palate, delicate fruit dances over the tongue balanced by gentle salinity and a slightly bitter, green almond finish. This is an excellent partner to most summer flavours, but it’s perfect with the Puglian traditional dish, frisa salentina – toasted bread topped with fresh tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, oregano and sometimes capers and fresh fish.
