This is named after the Donna Lisa estate, which is about eight km southwest of the Salento village on a lovely pocket of mixed clay and limestone soil. With up to 300 days of sunshine each year in a particularly hot and harsh climate, this drought-resistant grape revels in conditions promoting high levels of sugar over the growing season. Negroamaro is typically deep in color, with spicy, earthy accents and substantial tannic structure. It is partnered here with 10% Malvasia Nera, a thin-skinned, aromatic red that is the yin to Negroamaro’s yang. Pressing and maceration were followed by 18 months maturation in French oak barriques.
A profound wine that is nonetheless balanced at 15% alcohol, contrasting aromas of potting soil, cassis and vanilla give way to a full and velvety palate with black cherry, sweet spice, toast and aromatic herbal tones all set over a formidible framework of tannins. Aging is recommended but the sweet-toned intensity still makes this an enjoyable wine now.

“Rich, dark ruby red with a garnet rim. The nose has an intense aroma of ripe cherry, plum, orange peel, sage and balsamic notes, against a background of savouriness. Fresh and juicy on the palate, with a fine fruit core and light herbal savouriness, the acidity and tannins are in good balance. Long-lasting finish.” 92 points, Falstaff
