Leone de Castris 50° Vendemmia Negroamaro Salice Salentino DOC Riserva

The Leone de Castris family first made this wine in 1954. In 2004 they added a ‘50’ to the label to signify the anniversary, and even though it’s pushing its 75th anniversary now, it just stuck. Despite not being the most premium, this is the flagbearer of the range, a Negroamaro-based wine (with 10% Malvasia Nera). As a Riserva it is always matured for a minimum for two years before release, but its a wine known for retaining a particular juiciness along with its ripeness and fortitude. The 2020 was matured for 12 months in oak of various sizes, mainly larger barrels.

The bouquet impresses with intense cherry fruit, a fine woody note and subtle spice. Powerful and juicy on the palate, it’s also round and wonderfully harmonious, with fruity sensations of blackberry and black cherry, notes of basil and sweet spice. Strong, but never intrusive tannins taper on a wonderfully long finish. If you only have one Negroamaro, it should be this one.

2020

“Attractive nose of ripe dark berries, cocoa, dark licorice and hints of crushed stones. It’s smooth and textural on the palate, with a very attractive fruit component. Rich but bright and very precise. Really well made.” 92 points, James Suckling
