The eponymous wine was first made in 2000 and is a Syrah-dominant wine with smaller amounts of Petit Verdot and other new-world grapes from the Castello estate depending on vintage conditions. The soils on which the Syrah grows are rich in ferrous minerals with the presence of stones and fossils. The perfect inclination towards the Mediterranean Sea, a unique reflection of the sun, the light breeze of the coast and the abundance of sunlight promote a unique and exclusive ripening. Maturation of this wine is always in new French oak, for up to two years. This, combined with the stony soils and warm maritime climate give this wine a decidedly New-world style.
2012
“…Showing more heat and softness in the Syrah, Petit Verdot and other red varieties present in the blend. This vintage also shows a looser texture and a more opaque quality of aromas, with fewer sharp accents or high notes. Instead, the aromatic delivery is large and wide.” 92 points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
2011
“Deeply redolent of balsam notes that recall rosemary oil and eucalyptus. The wine opens to a deeply saturated garnet-black color and thick consistency. The bouquet boasts thick notes of black fruit, with black olive, exotic spice and more of those balsam notes that are so prominent at the outset. The mouthfeel is thickly textured and dense.” 92 points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
2007
“Blackberries, spices, licorice, violets and tar are woven together in a seamless fabric of notable elegance and sheer class. The perception of tannin is barely noticeable. Readers will be tempted to drink the 2007 young, but my sense is that the wine is still at least a few years away from giving its all.” 96 points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
