This is a 70/30 Nero d’Avola, Syrah blend from Cusumano’s Presti e Pegni estate. Translating as ‘heat and sun’, yet moderated by its sea-facing exposure, this site is known for its intense and complex Nero d’Avola. Taking a pinch of new-world styling to add to the indigenous variety and traditionally nurtured site, 100% destemming and cold maceration of Nero and Syrah were fermented and matured mainly in steel, with just a fifth being sent to large-format barrels.
Despite the impression the name of the site may give, this wine presents as plush and complex rather than dense or heavy. Brooding yet ripe flavours of blackberries and cherries meet cedar and smoke over firm tannins. Partner with lamb ragu or strong game dishes.
