Cusumano

Benchmark quality Sicilian wines by brothers Alberto and Diego Cusumano

Cusumano wines are drawn from seven sites in four regions throughout Sicily, from seaside vineyards to the side of the Etna Volcano. Brothers Alberto and Diego Cusumano, with the help of oenologist Mario Ronco, created the winery in 2001 and after several years the it became a symbol of dynamism and innovation of the Sicilian oenology, still tied to tradition and history of the land.

Considering the connection to the island, there is a focus on indigenous Sicilian grape varieties like Nero d’Avola, Insolia and Grillo, but these sometimes find partners in French varieties like Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Cusumano is among the top ten wineries to visit in Sicily, as selected by Stephen Brook – Decanter Magazine UK.

Terroir Summary:

Cusumano farms vineyards across several of Sicily’s most important growing zones, allowing each variety to be matched to its ideal environment. Coastal estates benefit from warm Mediterranean sunshine tempered by sea breezes, producing ripe fruit while maintaining freshness. Inland sites feature clay-limestone soils that contribute structure and depth. On the slopes of Mount Etna, vineyards rise to 1,000 metres, where volcanic soils, dramatic diurnal temperature shifts and mountain influences create wines of remarkable precision and minerality. Indigenous varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Grillo and Carricante express distinct regional character, while international varieties achieve excellent balance and concentration. This diversity of terroirs allows Cusumano to produce a comprehensive portfolio that captures the richness and complexity of modern Sicily.

Heritage:

Founded in 2001 by brothers Alberto and Diego Cusumano, the winery quickly became one of the leading forces behind Sicily’s quality revolution. Rather than relying on purchased fruit, the family invested heavily in estate vineyards across the island, focusing on site expression and long-term sustainability. Their commitment helped elevate Sicily’s international reputation and established Cusumano as one of the region’s benchmark producers.

Philosophy:

Cusumano’s philosophy centres on expressing the diversity of Sicily through estate-grown fruit and vineyard-specific wines. The team prioritises sustainable viticulture, careful site selection and minimal intervention in the cellar. By combining traditional Sicilian varieties with modern winemaking techniques, they seek to produce wines that are authentic, approachable and representative of their origins. Sustainable agriculture remains a key pillar of the company’s long-term vision.

People:

The company remains family-owned and is led by brothers Alberto and Diego Cusumano. Their vision transformed a young winery into one of Sicily’s most recognised producers. Winemaker Mario Ronco oversees production, balancing innovation with respect for terroir. Together, the team has helped redefine perceptions of Sicilian wine on the global stage through consistent quality and a strong focus on vineyard expression.

Beyond the Vine:

Cusumano’s portfolio spans multiple estates throughout Sicily, each dedicated to varieties best suited to local conditions. The winery also produces olive oil and welcomes visitors to experience the island’s diverse landscapes. Their Alta Mora project on Mount Etna has become particularly influential in showcasing the elegance and age-worthiness of Sicily’s volcanic wines.
