100% Aglianico grapes were grown at altitude across several villages surrounding Monte Vulture. For this wine, the harvest can be as late as the beginning of December, when the grapes wither as a result of the cold. After a hand harvest and sorting, the fruit is macerated for 30 days and ferments in stainless steel. Maturation is in French oak for 24 months, followed by further maturation in bottle for a minimum of two years before release.
Termed by Notaio as Il morbido abbraccio del Vulcano, or ‘the soft embrace of the Volcano’, the extended hang time for bunches and maceration on skins has provided complexity, weight and structure beyond the Repertorio wine. Deep in colour, the black and red berry fruit flavours are potent and sweet, backed by carob, leather and liquorice and a plethora of sweet spice and dried flowers. Smokey minerals, pepper and menthol provide contrast and lift to the ripe and muscular palate. Despite the weight, elegance is always there, stretching across a long and luxuriant finish of spice and dark chocolate.

“A noteworthy wine that represents the best from this historic producer … offers a fascinating view into aged Aglianico. That classic tannic bitterness has subsided and the wine is almost chalky in aromas and mouthfeel. The bouquet has powdery candy with cherry and dark grape. These transition to ashy mineral, white licorice, campfire ash and crushed pepper. ” 93 points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
