The Smithy is named after a tin‑roofed, mud‑and‑straw cottage that still stands on Gibson’s home property in Light Pass—once the home of the local blacksmith in the 1850s and now a quiet reminder of the region’s early settlers. The wine takes inspiration from that sense of durability and humble character, built around the classic Aussie blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Made from Barossa fruit and matured for 18 months in a mix of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads, it aims to bring together aromatic lift, structural depth and the seamless flow that defines this traditional combination.
2023
With few hot days and slow ripening, 2023’s fruit retained purity and clear varietal character—ideal conditions for a blend that relies on freshness as much as richness.
“This is an earthy, savoury style, with notes of mushrooms, cloves, dry herbs and beef stock. The palate sees the emergence of black fruits, chocolate, blackberries and coffee grinds. Good focus, good balance and very good length are all present. This is a 10-year proposition. A wine for carnivores. Drink now–2035” 93 Points, The Vintage Journal
“Deep ruby hue. Mulberry, tobacco leaf and black olive aromas. Deep palate of black and blue fruit with olive tapenade and tobacco leaf lift. Richly weighted yet balanced by gravel tannins, flowing long to a drying, warming finish” 92 points, Stuart Knox, The Real Review
