A wine that is made in Australia and Italian at heart, Three minds is a tribute to the friendship of three migrants from Toscana, Puglia and Abruzzo, stirred up with decades of immersion in Australian culture and companionship in the wine industry.
Carlo, Fred and Mario came from the golden triangle of Italy’s food and wine areas, and their love of a good red is one of the elements that has bonded them over the last decades.
Although they were each involved with wine in different ways throughout their careers, this is the first wine to be composed from the site they have owned for much of that time, by Carlo in honour of his old friends. It’s exactly the kind of wine they first united over upon reaching Australia, with strong regional expression, bold personality and the ability to evolve over many years.
2021 was an excellent year in the Coonawarra, a return to the classic years—with plenty of sunshine, but generally quite cool and dry conditions. The protracted ripening season allowed for excellent flavour development, providing the acidity, complexity and structure deemed perfect for this inaugural vintage. The Vineyard
Situated on McGillivray Rd, not far from the Coonawarra township, the Three Minds vineyard covers a broad, flat area of about 35 acres. It was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the mid 1990s.
This particular bottling is from a smaller parcel of Reynella clone Cabernet Sauvignon chosen for its brighter, red-fruited profile, earthy thumbprint and fresh, peppermint-patty notes. Thin duplex soils (a mix of petrocalcic red Dermosol and rendzina) lie over limestone. The soils are rich in calcium and iron oxide and very free-draining. This allows the growers great control on the level of stress they allow the vines to receive. Vigour is controlled and irrigation is used only if absolutely necessary.
