Abruzzo native Domenico Scarpantoni purchased his first vineyard in McLaren Vale in 1958. While building a firm regional resume at Hardy’s Tintara winery then as vineyard manager for Seaview Wines, he privately became one of the largest independent grape growers in McLaren Vale. The winery was finally built in 1979 with help from sons Michael and Filippo, who now manage the estate.
Key to Scarpantoni’s success is several distinctly different sets of terroir over the 40-hectare estate. This ranges from the soil types; through to the deep sands of the very old vine Block 3; the red ironstone of the Brothers Block; the Coonawarra- like terra rossa on limestone on California Road; and the hard limestone rock of the coastal fringe site at Maslin Beach. This all allows for a variety of wine styles to be produced.
Shiraz is still the front runner, but is now joined by newer varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Gamay. All grapes are sourced from the estate, with the single-block wines supported by a McLaren Vale range of wines blended from across the whole estate.
