“Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti has been caring for this family business all his life, as well as for this area of cultivation, which has also gained in visibility thanks to his presence over the past 20 years.” Gambero Rosso
Aglianico del Vulture (ahl-YAH-nee-ko del VOOL-too-ray), nicknamed ‘Barolo of the south’ is a bold, tannic and long-lived wine that grows around the extinct volcano of Monte Vulture in the Basilicata region, about halfway between Bari and Naples. Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti, President of the “Qui Vulture” Consortium for the promotion of the Vulture area’s wines and owner and winegrower at Cantine del Notaio is undoubtedly the champion of the grape and this region in modern history. He’s also responsible for some of the most elegant and awarded expressions of Aglianico worldwide.
The Notaio winery is located in Rionero at the foot of the mount, with 40 hectares of biodynamically run ancient vineyards extending across the villages of Barile, Ripacandida, Maschito and Ginestra. The altitudes are range between 300 and 650m, while the volcanic soil is fertile and rich in mineral elements, laid over thick, deep tufo rock. The rock under the villages contains the winery’s cellar network, a honeycomb of ancient grottos, dating back to 1600 and developed by Franciscan Monks. The wines produced here are intense and profound reds, alternating sweet and savoury spice, black fruits and liquorice. Our range shows the multiple Tre Bicchieri awarded Repertorio, then two premium wines which have seen later harvest of the grapes before vinification.
