The Capetta family’s operation in Piedmont produces the gamut of table wines from Piemonte from sweet and light whites through to deep and brooding reds. And, although there is great representation from the more famed sited like Langhe and Roero, Moscato hills of Cuneo, Asti and Alessandria are the home base, and Moscato has aways been Balbi’s signature wine.
Known for its very high levels of residual sugar, the key to Moscato d’Asti’s deliciousness is the balance of sweetness and acidity, plus careful handling to ensure the lively floral and stone fruit characters don’t get lost – something Balbi handles deftly. It’s a very harmonious example of the grape, with an opulent vinous aroma containing hints of acacia blossom and wisteria. The palate is sweet and fruit-driven but well balanced with cleansing acid and just the slightest spritz.
