Cantina Mesa

Cantina Mesa

Flavourful Sardinian wines sourced from the 'medaus' of Lower Sulcis

Established in 2004 by acclaimed Sardinian advertising creative Gavino Sanna, Cantina Mesa was conceived as far more than a winery—it was a declaration of pride in Sardinia, its landscapes and its native grape varieties. Located in the Sulcis region of the island’s south-west, near Sant’Anna Arresi and Porto Pino, Mesa focuses on varieties that speak authentically of place. For the Australian market, that story is told through two wines: Giunco Vermentino di Sardegna DOC and Primo Scuro Cannonau di Sardegna DOC. Influenced by Mediterranean sunshine, constant sea breezes and mineral-rich coastal soils, these wines express the freshness, salinity and warmth that define Sardinian viticulture.

Authentic Sardinian Provenance – Produced in the Sulcis region of south-west Sardinia, one of the Mediterranean’s most distinctive wine-growing areas.

Terroir Summary

The Sulcis district of south-west Sardinia is shaped by the Mediterranean Sea, persistent coastal winds and intense sunlight. Vineyards overlook the Porto Pino valley, where sea breezes moderate summer temperatures and help maintain vine health throughout the growing season. Rainfall is limited and largely confined to autumn and winter. The wines derive much of their personality from the region’s complex soils, which range from sandy coastal deposits to clay loams and weathered sandstone formations rich in calcium and mineral elements.

Heritage

Cantina Mesa was founded in 2004 by Gavino Sanna, one of Italy’s most influential advertising and creative figures. Having built a global career working with some of the country’s most recognised brands, Sanna returned to Sardinia with a vision of presenting his homeland to the world through wine. The result was Mesa—a project designed to capture the culture, landscapes and generosity of the island in every bottle. The name Mesa translates as “table” in both Sardinian and Spanish, reflecting concepts of hospitality, family and shared meals that sit at the heart of Mediterranean life. The first vintage was in 2005.

Philosophy

For Cantina Mesa, wine is an expression of Sardinian identity. Vineyard work focuses on preserving the integrity of the Sulcis terroir and allowing native varieties to communicate their origin as clearly as possible. Low-intervention viticulture, carefully managed yields and a strong connection to place underpin the estate’s approach. In the cellar, the aim is clarity rather than influence. Certified under Italy’s SQNPI integrated production scheme and Biodiversity Friend program, Mesa places particular emphasis on vineyard balance, biodiversity and environmentally responsible farming practices. This commitment extends beyond the vineyard, with ongoing efforts to reduce resource consumption and protect the rural culture of Sulcis, ensuring that the environmental and human elements that define the region continue to thrive alongside its wines.
