Alta Mora

Alta Mora

High-altitude volcano wines from the varied contrade of Mount Etna

It has been a lifelong dream for Diego and Alberto Cusumano to build a winery amongst the high, black, fertile soils of the largest active volcano in Europe, Mt. Etna. After years of searching, in April 2013 a unique opportunity arose to acquire the first three contrade on the northern slopes. They named the project Alta Mora, translating as ‘high, black’ to represent the unique terroir.

Beginning with the reconstruction of the traditional dry stone walls of the terraces of Guardiola, one of Etna’s most coveted vineyard sites (at between 800 and 1000m above sea level), Alta Mora now boasts has parcels in the varied contrade of Feudo di Mexxo, Pietramarina, Solicchiata and Verzella, where the modern winery is now situated. All Alta Mora wines are estate-grown, hand- harvested and certified by SOStain, Sicily’s sustainable viticulture program.

Terroir Summary:

Alta Mora is Cusumano’s dedicated Etna project, located on the northern and eastern slopes of Mount Etna. The vineyards sit between 600 and 1,000 metres above sea level, among ancient lava flows and volcanic terraces. These high elevations bring cooler temperatures and significant day-night temperature swings, preserving acidity and aromatic complexity. The volcanic soils are rich in minerals and exceptionally well-drained, encouraging deep root systems and naturally low yields. Nerello Mascalese thrives here, producing elegant, structured reds with red fruit, floral notes and volcanic minerality, while Carricante delivers precise, age-worthy whites marked by freshness and saline character. Alta Mora highlights the individuality of Etna’s contrade and showcases one of Italy’s most distinctive terroirs.

Heritage:

Recognising the extraordinary potential of Etna, the Cusumano family established Alta Mora as a standalone project focused exclusively on the volcano’s unique terroir. Through careful acquisition and restoration of historic vineyard sites, the project has become an important contributor to the modern renaissance of Etna wines and a flagship expression of volcanic viticulture in Sicily.

Philosophy:

Alta Mora seeks to capture the purity of Etna through sustainable vineyard management and minimal cellar intervention. The emphasis is on preserving the identity of each vineyard site and highlighting the nuances of altitude, exposure and volcanic soil. Traditional varieties and thoughtful viticulture form the foundation of wines that are transparent reflections of place.

People:

The project benefits from the broader Cusumano team while maintaining a specialised focus on Etna’s demanding mountain vineyards. Under the guidance of the Cusumano family and winemaker Mario Ronco, Alta Mora has developed a reputation for producing refined wines that combine precision, elegance and a strong sense of origin.

Beyond the Vine:

Etna is Europe’s most active volcano and one of the world’s most fascinating wine regions.
