Can Majella’s Musician and Composer do no wrong? After multiple trophies and golds, they have both just topped their categories in the 2024 Winewise Championship. The revolving panel of this classic blind-tasted comp included the usual Winewise suspects, but also Tim Knappstein and Andrew Graham. Now, not to name names, but these two sub-$30 retail reds have managed to pip some very great wines at the post, including Yalumba Signature, Xanadu Reserve, Kaesler WOMS and Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 1. They will both probably roll onto the 2022 before the end of the year, so there’s never been a better time to grab some value from the superb 2021 vintage.
Majella The Composer 2021
The Composer is crafted from select parcels of estate grown fruit from the Majella estate vineyard in Coonawarra. Individual parcels of fruit were fermented in stainless steel fermenters for five days, then transferred to French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks to finish fermentation. Maturation was for another 6 months in oak before each batch was assessed, blended and bottled. Lush eucalyptus and red fruit aromas are paired with a bright, flavourful and medium-weighted palate of cassis and red berries. Subtle oak integration enhances the smooth and balanced finish.
